Request a Quote Talk to an EngineerGreen hydrogen, battery materials and Power-to-X all end at the same place: an electrochemical cell where current is exchanged across a coated titanium surface. In a PEM electrolyser the iridium-based anode is the most expensive single element per square metre in the stack — and the one that decides overpotential, efficiency and lifetime.
The whole economics sit on the coating. A correct Ir-Ta MMO coating holds a stable oxygen-evolution potential for 3–8 years at 0.5–2 kA/m², while a poor coating drifts in potential, dissolves in the acid medium, and dies in months. Coating formulation, precious-metal loading and substrate surface finish decide whether your stack makes hydrogen or a repair bill.
Four failure modes dominate real installations — from PEM stacks to alkaline cells. Each one is preventable with the right coating and cell design.
PEM anodes run in strong acid at high current density. A coating with high oxygen-evolution overpotential wastes voltage as heat and dissolves faster — the stack degrades cell by cell.
Solar and wind supply is cyclic. Repeated load ramps, partial-load periods and standby all oxidise the coating and lift it from the substrate unless the electrode is rated for your duty profile, not just peak amperage.
Trace metal ions and chlorides in impure feed water or electrolyte deactivate noble-metal coatings, pushing cell voltage up and current efficiency down — often invisibly for months.
Iridium and platinum are the cost drivers of new-energy electrodes. Over-coating wastes precious metal; under-coating fails early. Correct loading verified per batch is the difference between optimised CAPEX and silent waste.
Match your electrolyte and duty to the correct coating and format. The table below is the fast path — our engineers refine it with your stack voltage, temperature and operating profile.
